Huntington North High School senior Zach Hubartt made his college choice official on Monday afternoon, signing with the University of Saint Francis in Ft. Wayne to continue his academic and basketball careers with the Cougars.
Hubartt noted that some of the biggest factors in choosing Saint Francis were the proximity to home and having a quality basketball program with a personable coaching staff.
“This has been a goal of mine, to play college basketball, for a while, so knowing that I have an opportunity to go play somewhere feels really good,” Hubartt said at the signing. “I’m excited to be right there with them, going to practice with the guys that are already there and going to play all the games. It should be a fun opportunity for me.”
A standout member of the Viking basketball team for the last three seasons, Hubartt established himself as one of the most well-rounded and dangerous players in Northeast Indiana as a senior.
Huntington North boys basketball head coach Craig Teagle had high praise for his star guard and knows Hubartt will succeed at the next level.
“Zach is coachable, loves the game and has an outstanding work ethic,” Teagle said. “He always participated in every drill at top speed. I believe in the last two years of doing conditioners during practice he finished first every time. He is probably the best athlete that I have coached in my 35 years of being a high school basketball coach. We will miss Zach’s leadership, toughness and his ability to score points from a variety of locations on the floor.”
A two-year captain for the Vikes, Hubartt led his squad in scoring as a junior and senior and paced the team in rebounds and steals as a senior.
In 64 total games for the varsity team, Hubartt tallied 901 points, 296 rebounds, 120 assists, 90 steals and 25 blocks in 1,668 minutes of action, highlighted by an impressive senior season that saw him record 418 points, 124 rebounds, 44 assists, 35 steals and eight blocks. Hubartt’s career-best output came in his final regular season home game, pouring in 34 points against Marion on Feb. 19, 2022, a comfortable 66–51 victory for the Vikings.
Hubartt’s prowess on the court earned him Northeast 8 Conference (NE8) First Team All-Conference honors as a junior and senior and was named to the IBCA All-State Honorable Mention list following his senior campaign.
Hubartt also spent time with the Viking football team before trading in his helmet for shin guards to join the Huntington North soccer team as a senior, where he developed into an NE8 all-conference defender and a leader for the team both on and off the field. Hubartt also spent two years with the Viking track and field team.
Hubartt is currently undecided for a major at Saint Francis but plans to pursue business in the future.
