After 26 years in education and the last 25 years at HCCSC serving various roles, Superintendent Chad Daugherty will resign to accept a position serving as the Deputy Superintendent of Dorchester 2 School District in Summerville, South Carolina.
Daugherty started his career as a student teacher under the late Dave Reeves at Huntington North High School before serving as a seventh grade geography teacher at Norwell Middle School for a year before coming back to Huntington North to teach geography and coach baseball and football for the Vikings for the next seven years.
Daugherty then went on to serve as assistant principal and athletic director at Salamonie School for a year before moving to Crestview Middle School to serve in the same roles for two years before being promoted to principal at Crestview and serving in that role for five years.
Daugherty then went back to where it all started to serve as the principal at Huntington North for four years. He then took the leap to central office to serve as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for three years and then was elevated to superintendent of HCCSC for the past three years.
“I have been very fortunate to be able to serve in these roles in the same district for the past 25 years without moving my family,” Daugherty said. “I feel like each of these positions prepared me for the next position. We have been very blessed and fortunate to have raised five children in the community and send them to HCCSC, where they have received an excellent education. The friendships and relationships that we have built with students, parents, teachers, support staff and community members has been the biggest highlight of my career that will last a lifetime. It does not get much better to see and hear from a student you had in class as a teacher or as an administrator to come back and tell you that you impacted their life in a positive manner. It does not matter what role you serve in the district, you have a chance to add value to the lives of young people and that is ‘why’ we do what we do. I am confident this same attitude will continue under new leadership. I have been very blessed and grateful for the opportunity to have been able to serve HCCSC and the community of Huntington and this would not have been possible if it were not for the many people that served as mentors to me growing up.”
Under Daugherty’s guidance as superintendent, HCCSC successfully navigated the COVID-19 pandemic in large part thanks to Daugherty’s foresight in the preparation for and implementation of the district’s eLearning program to continue students’ learning at a high level.
“The HCCSC Board of School Trustees would like to thank Superintendent Chad Daugherty for his many years of service to our school corporation,” said Board of School Trustees President Matt Roth. “Chad has been with HCCSC for over 25 years and has served in a variety of roles, including teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and then superintendent. Chad became superintendent right before the COVID-19 pandemic began and helped successfully guide HCCSC through that trying time. During his tenure as superintendent, Chad also oversaw the construction of a new Roanoke Elementary School, expansion of the HNHS Learning Center and construction of a new multi-purpose stadium and softball field at HNHS. We wish Chad and his family best wishes as Chad continues his career in education at his new position in the state of South Carolina.”
Daugherty’s resignation was approved by the HCCSC Board of School Trustees during Monday night’s meeting. Daugherty’s final day as superintendent will be July 29.
Assistant Superintendent for Business and Classified Staff John Trout will serve as Interim Superintendent. The Board of School Trustees will aggressively pursue the hiring of a new superintendent to minimize any transition period.
