Huntington North High School (HNHS) and the Huntington County Community School Corporation (HCCSC) have amended the guidelines for HNHS senior parking spots, effective for the 2022-23 school year.
With the senior parking spot painting being a long-standing tradition at HNHS, changes to the guidelines were proposed for the coming school year in order to promote a stronger sense of school spirit and pride and to therefore strengthen the Viking culture.
However, these proposed changes were met with swift and firm opposition from students and alumni. Upon reviewing the proposed changes in light of the opposition presented, HNHS and HCCSC administration has decided to honor the request of the students and alumni to closely follow the existing guidelines for the senior parking spots, with minor adjustments being made for clarity.
“The proposed guidelines were intended to increase school spirit and creativity, but missed the mark,” said HCCSC Superintendent Chad Daugherty. “We have listened to students and alumni and now realize how important this opportunity for seniors to express themselves is, and what a tremendous tradition it has become.”
The design criteria for senior parking spot painting for the 2022-23 school year are as follows:
— All designs will be reviewed by administration. A copy of the approved design will be kept on file with the student’s parking spot information. Any questionable designs will be discussed and evaluated by administration.
— Senior parking space designs must be completed in color and must represent exactly what will be painted on your parking space to be accepted. Variation from the approved design proposal will warrant surrender of the reserved space and the spot will be painted black.
— No double meanings and/or hidden meanings.
— No political or political-related content will be allowed.
— No offensive language, pictures or symbols.
— You may work with others to create a “block” of spaces with your friends. Please note this is on your application.
— All designs must be school-appropriate and follow all HNHS handbook guidelines.
Additional information and requirements for senior parking spots will be available with the senior parking spot application, which will be available beginning Monday, May 2.
