Horace Mann Elementary teacher Macy Phillips was named as a winner of the Teachers Are Heroes contestHorace Mann Elementary fourth grade teacher Macy Phillips was recently named as a winner of the Teachers Are Heroes contest held by 97.3 WMEE and K105 radio stations in Ft. Wayne.

The contest recognizes teachers in northeast Indiana who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of their students. Winners for the contest are selected twice per month.

“Knowing that this school year was going to be even more challenging for our teachers, we felt it was important now more than ever to draw attention to some of these great stories that parents are sharing,” said Jimmy Knight, who serves as the Operations Manager for 97.3 WMEE and K105. “And, it is our hope that this will not stop here; teachers are always going above and beyond to serve the needs of their students and families. K105/97.3 WMEE and our sponsors are proud to support this program and all of the great teachers across our area.”

Phillips’ on-air recognition for the award debuted on Feb. 25. As part of the on-air recognition, words from Horace Mann parent Lisa Leedy, who nominated Phillips, were shared with listeners.

“(I) can’t begin to say everything Miss Phillips does for all her students; she is truly a hero to all,” Leedy shared with 97.3 WMEE and K105. “All us parents can talk to her about our kids anytime after hours. I have never in my years seen any teacher go above and beyond her duties as a teacher. We really love her.”

Phillips shared that the award caught her off guard and meant a lot to her even though she cannot fully take the credit for the honor.

“There are so many teachers in our district that deserve to be recognized!” Phillips said. “We don’t do this job for the recognition, but it is a nice surprise and so heartwarming! I am honestly still shocked! I wish my paraprofessionals in my room could have been recognized as well. I couldn’t do this job without Ms. Erica and Ms. Deb!”

As part of the award, Phillips received a prize pack of $100 for classroom supplies from 3 Rivers, a free oil change and car detailing from Bart's Car Store, new shoes up to $150 from Fred Toenges Footwear and a $50 silver coin from Bradley Gough Diamonds. Additionally, Leedy received a prize for being the parent who nominated the winning teacher.
