Huntington North senior Cam McCarver signed with Trine University to continue his academic and football careersHuntington North High School senior Cam McCarver put pen to paper on Wednesday afternoon, officially signing with Trine University to continue his academic and football careers.

A three-sport athlete for the Vikings, McCarver ultimately chose to focus on football. McCarver made a huge impact on the Vikes during his injury-shortened senior season. Huntington North football head coach Bob Prescott knows McCarver will leave a big hole on the team both on and off the field but knows McCarver will transition well to the next level.

“Cam’s work ethic (sets him apart),” Prescott said. “He is an explosive, powerful athlete in the weight room. He has some God-given gifts. His desire, determination and work ethic has made him the athlete that he is today. Cam has a unique combination of power, speed, blocking ability and physicalness. I don’t know how you replace Cam’s on-the-field performance. Cam is an even better teammate and leader. We are grateful for the legacy that Cam and his senior teammates left on our program.”

McCarver tallied four receiving touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and one defensive interception touchdown in just six games. Offensively, McCarver hauled in 19 catches for a total of 400 yards and added 203 yards on 50 carries on the ground. For his career as a receiver, McCarver posted a total of 63 receptions for 880 yards and seven touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, McCarver recorded 18 tackles and 45 assists, including three tackles for a loss and one sack, to go along with his pick-six.

McCarver’s accomplishments during his senior season earned him Northeast 8 Conference First Team All-Conference and IFCA Academic All-State honors in addition to being named to the Region 5 All-Star Team.

Though considering other schools, McCarver noted Trine stood out to him for several reasons and made his decision that much easier as a result.

“Coach (Troy) Abbs, he’s a big part of it,” McCarver said at the signing. “They’re winners up there, they like to win. They felt that I fit in their offensive scheme really well. That was a lot to me. … Offensively, I think I can work really well into the blocking scheme, move some guys out and I think I can work heavily in the pass game, too. … And their education department, it was just huge. They do really well and have a lot of guys go out into the field right out of college and that was a big part of it.”

Away from the gridiron, McCarver earned scholar athlete status and starred for Huntington North’s basketball and baseball teams and will wrap up his athletics career with the Vikings on the diamond this spring.

McCarver plans to study social studies education at Trine.
