Huntington County Community Schools Partners with United With Love for New Community Garden Initiative
Huntington, IN – In a recent School Board meeting on October 28th, the Huntington County Community School Corporation (HCCSC) took an exciting step toward community enrichment by approving a partnership with the non-profit United With Love for a new community garden project. Erin Didian, Executive Director of United With Love, presented the initiative, emphasizing the garden's dual mission to supply fresh produce and create stronger community bonds.
The garden will be located on a portion of the former Kriegbaum Field, close to the Huntington County Community Learning Center. Didian highlighted that the garden’s operational costs would be covered through secured funding, ensuring no financial burden on the school district. United With Love will manage the project, with volunteers overseeing maintenance and growth throughout the season.
Board members expressed strong support, noting that the garden aligns with HCCSC's commitment to community development and civic engagement. Plans include installing a shed with rain barrels for sustainable water access, and volunteers from United With Love will be responsible for ongoing maintenance. “We hope this garden grows so much that we have to revisit and expand it in the future,” said Superintendent John Trout, acknowledging the potential for community impact.
The partnership reflects HCCSC’s continued focus on supporting initiatives that strengthen local connections. The garden joins other community-centered activities, including HCCSC’s recent events like the community Trunk-or-Treat and Friday night football gatherings, which bring local residents together.
Board members unanimously approved the project with a 6-0 vote.
