Huntington, IN - In a groundbreaking move to enhance school safety and student support, Huntington County Community Schools is set to introduce a specialized K9 program at Riverview Middle School. The initiative, presented during the March 24, 2025 school board meeting, represents a collaborative effort between local law enforcement and community partners.
A Unique Safety Solution
The program will introduce a carefully selected Labrador retriever to serve alongside School Resource Officer Daniel Lowes. Unlike traditional police dogs, this K9 will focus on detection and support, not aggression. Key capabilities include:
- Narcotic detection
- Potential firearm detection
- Student tracking in emergency situations
- Positive community engagement
Community Collaboration
The program is made possible through a generous contribution from Bowen Health and support from the Huntington City Police Department and Huntington County Sheriff's Department. Dr. Rob Ryan, Bowen Health President and CEO, emphasized the partnership's importance in supporting local youth.
"Together, we're investing in relationships and teaching our future leaders," Dr. Ryan stated during the presentation.
More Than Just Detection
School Resource Officer Daniel Lowes highlighted the dog's potential beyond safety measures. "These canines can break down walls, help students in crisis, and create a positive environment within our schools," Lowes explained.
The K9 will undergo extensive training through the Allen County Sheriff's Department and is expected to be deployed at the start of the next school year.
Looking Ahead
Chief of Police Cory Boxel noted that school K9 programs are one of the fastest-growing segments of school resource officer programs nationwide, reflecting a innovative approach to school safety and student support.
Every Student. Every Day.
