Andrews Elementary Students Make Their Mark
Andrews, IN—Fifth-grade high-ability students in Miss Neal’s class at Andrews Elementary transformed their studies of literary themes into a meaningful community art project. After analyzing themes in books, students turned their attention to their own school community, interviewing students from all grade levels to identify the values that define Andrews Elementary.
Through their research, the fifth graders discovered that Andrews students consistently demonstrate positivity and hard work—qualities reflected in every student, every day. Inspired by their findings, the students designed a mural to give everyone a voice and celebrate what makes their school community special.
Working with local artist America Carrillo, the students developed a design that captures the spirit of Andrews Elementary. Ms. Carrillo has agreed to create the mural at her new building in downtown Huntington once students raise funds for materials. The fifth graders presented their proposal to HCCS district administrators and parents, sharing their research findings, fundraising ideas, and enthusiasm for the project.
This student-led initiative demonstrates how academic learning extends beyond the classroom to create a lasting impact in our community. We are incredibly proud of these students’ hard work, creativity, and dedication to celebrating the values that unite us all.
