During the most recent school board meeting on May 8, six HCCSC members were invited to be recognized for displaying HCCSC‘s core value of High Expectations, High Achievement and Accountability. The members were grouped by Executive Secretary Cindy Gray and thanked and congratulated by Superintendent John Trout. Trout also gave a brief summary of the recipients’ achievements.
After being verbally recognized, Director of Elementary Education Jay Peters and School Board member Kari Heim gave the individuals an official certificate in honor of their core value and took a picture with the honorees to remember the moment.
Firstly recognized was Riverview Middle School student Landrie Scheiber. Scheiber was the winner of the middle school division of the Youth Art Month art contest held by the Art Education Association of Indiana earlier this year. Scheiber had the opportunity to travel for an additional recognition for this accomplishment during an awards ceremony and banquet at the Indiana State House.
By winning this award, Scheiber received an art supply bundle and $300 gift card from Black Art Materials for the Riverview art program. While Scheiber was not able to attend the school board meeting, she will still be sent home a certificate and a congratulatory letter in honor of her success.
Two students, Cameron Oswald and Braxton Tharp, taught by precision machining teacher Brian Murray, competed at the Indiana Tooling and Machining Association competition held earlier this year. Oswald placed first in manual machining and received tooling estimated to value $2,655 and a tuition voucher to Vincennes University for $2,000. Tharp placed third in CNC mill and received tooling with a value of $1,465 and received a tuition voucher to Vincennes University as well for $750.
All three members, Murray, Oswald and Tharp, work very hard throughout the year to sharpen their skills as precision machinists and this competition shows exactly what they are capable of. Oswald unfortunately was unable to attend the meeting, but will be sent a certificate and congratulatory letter that Murray and Tharp were presented with for their success.
In an interesting turn of events, HCCSC school board member J. Ryan Wall was presented with the next recognition in honor of Wall receiving the Indiana School Board Association’s Exemplary Governance Awards program. This program celebrates school board members who have demonstrated a commitment to student success and excellence in public service by engaging in regular and ongoing professional development and learning. By receiving the Advanced Award, Wall has earned at least 125 EGA points through attending ISBA-sponsored or recognized trainings, seminars and conferences.
This award is presented to a small portion of school board members in the state. Only 197 members received any type of EGA award and only 60 received the Advanced Award presented to Wall. Wall was recognized for putting such effort into becoming a well-rounded and educated member of the local school board.
Huntington North High School student Kenzie Gamlin was the final honoree of the night, being recognized for her work interning in the administration office this school year. Through HNHS’s work-based learning program, Gamlin has served the district as the Communications Intern and has done an excellent job of attending various events, taking photographs at events and writing articles highlighting things happening throughout the district.
Gamlin plans to attend Ball State University next school year to major in journalism and minor in Spanish. The high school senior is very thankful for her time working with the school corporation and having the honor to explore the work she enjoys while meeting influential people along the way.
