To add onto the celebration of the holidays at HCCSC, the corporation held its annual Christmas card contest. Five student-made cards were selected to be the fronts of HCCSC’s holiday cards, sent to the superintendent’s mailing list. Two cards came from Riverview Middle School and one card came from each of Lincoln Elementary School, Salamonie Elementary School and Crestview Middle School.
HCCSC asked art teachers from all over the corporation to have students design jolly, holiday-themed cards and submit them for the contest. With many entries to consider, the selection committee and HCCSC Superintendent John Trout spent days looking over the best of the best.
The task of only choosing five of the 121 cards submitted found itself to be very difficult. In all, 30 designs received votes from the committee. However, with some time, winners were chosen. This year’s winners are sixth-grader Ruby Grogg from Crestview Middle School, eighth-graders Lily Andrews and Charlie Close from Riverview Middle School, fifth-grader Leilani Burton from Lincoln Elementary School and fifth-grader Makayla Brauneller from Salamonie Elementary School.
The selected cards came out screaming with holiday spirit. Grogg created a card centered around the word “Rejoice,” which included colorful designs bouncing off of the letters and artistic touches surrounding the word. Andrews presented a card showcasing an elegant Christmas tree in front of a full moon with children holding hands wrapping around it. She encased the card with a wishful “Happy Holidays.” Close’s design consisted of a quarter view of the world with Santa and his reindeer circling around it with a festive message of “Merry Christmas.”
Burton went in a different direction, filling the card with much color and details, creating a cartoon-styled reindeer in front of a Christmas tree with bright lights and “Merry Christmas” written at the bottom. Brauneller rounded out the winning designs with a minimalist design of a ribbon-style Christmas tree lined with stars and writing “Joy to the World.”
Each of the winning students was presented with their framed original artwork and 10 copies of the holiday card featuring their respective design during the final week of the semester to honor the students’ creativity and execution of producing the selected designs.
