Huntington North senior Ashton Hosler signed with the University of Saint Francis to continue his academic and soccer careersHuntington North High School senior Ashton Hosler made his college commitment official on Tuesday, signing with the University of Saint Francis to continue his academic and soccer careers as a Cougar.

Hosler spent all four years of high school playing a large role for the Viking boys soccer varsity team and leaves the program as the all-time assist leader with 28. Hosler also boasts the most assists recorded in a single season with 19. While an elite set-up man, Hosler also found the back of the net 13 times during his time as a Vike. Hosler’s play earned him Northeast 8 Conference First Team All-Conference honors in his junior and senior seasons and NE8 Honorable Mention All-Conference honors in his freshman and sophomore seasons. Off the field, Hosler earned scholar athlete status in all three of his eligible sophomore, junior and senior years.

“He has a high soccer IQ and can assess what he needs to do to be effective on a game-by-game basis against his opponent,” said Huntington North boys soccer head coach Steve Saddington. “He can be a very physical player both offensively and defensively, so his tenacity will allow him to compete at the next level. In addition, although he was placed in an optimal position to score this year, he created numerous opportunities for his teammates to score, exhibiting his selflessness as a player on the field. We will miss his ability to set up and assist other people offensively, and his aggressive physical play when he has the ball or is near the ball defensively.”

Hosler also plays basketball for the Vikes, posting four points in 15 appearances between his sophomore and junior seasons before taking on a more prominent role this season, having started all 17 games for the Vikings so far this season, accumulating 30 points, 35 rebounds, 37 assists and 15 steals in the process.

Hosler noted that there were other NAIA schools he had considered, but in the end, he knew Saint Francis was the right fit.

“What stood out to me the most was the culture of the program,” Hosler said. “Coach Essig has done a great job of creating a better culture for the team. Joining the program and being a part of the building process makes me excited to be a Cougar!”

Though playing at the collegiate level will be new for Hosler, he will have some familiarity on the field, as two former Huntington North teammates play for the Cougars: Tyler Christle and Hosler’s older brother, Aidan, both 2020 Huntington North grads. Hosler said he is excited for an opportunity to play with his brother again, making it feel like the good old days with his brother in goal.

Hosler enjoyed his special day and was grateful for the support he received from family and friends.

“It meant a lot to me that so many of my friends took the time to come out and support me at the signing,” Hosler said. “I wasn’t sure if an opportunity to play at the next level would come, and now that it has, I’m glad I got to share the celebration with my people.”

Hosler plans to start as a general business major and will decide on a profession later in his college career.
