Easing the Transition from Elementary to Middle School

Easing the Transition from Elementary to Middle School

Crestview Middle School principal Mr. Werth brought 7th grade mentors back to Roanoke Elementary School for Q&A to help a group of 5th graders get comfortable with the transition.
The transition from elementary school to middle school can be difficult for some students. Crestview Middle School is trying to make that move easier and less stressful by implementing some new activities this year.

A benefit of the redistricting that took place at the beginning of this school year was that it allowed for the creation of ‘partner schools.’ Flint Springs, Lincoln, and Roanoke elementary schools will feed into Crestview Middle School and Andrews, Horace Mann, and Salamonie will feed into Riverview Middle School.

Crestview Principal, Chuck Werth, explains how they are using their partner schools to ease 5th graders into middle school. “We know that the transition from elementary to middle school can be daunting, so whatever we can do to make our future Cougars as comfortable as possible is our goal. In February, we had each feeder school come over to tour and explore our whole building with an interactive Scavenger Hunt. The 5th graders were guided on their hunt by 7th graders who previously attended their feeder elementary. In March, we sent the 7th grade guides back to their home elementary schools to participate in a panel discussion where the 5th graders asked them questions about middle school. Finally, in May, we are going to have all three feeder schools come to Crestview to join together as our incoming 6th grade class. They will spend the day experiencing a mini-schedule, meeting their teachers, and eating lunch. We are hoping that this will help our future Cougars transition successfully into their middle school experience.”

Students transitioning from elementary to middle school, and from middle school to high school often fear the unknown. The Crestview team is helping relieve some of that fear and embracing the HCCSC Core Value of ‘Focus on the Future’ to get incoming Cougars excited for what’s to come!
